Hello I am Ananya and I am supporting the idea that the government has failed in building the gulf coast after Katrina

Assertion: The Bush project was not doing its job

Reasoning: President Bush founded the the Bush administration,an organization in which it was supposed to help people who are impacted by storms. This organization ignored the cries for help during Katrina and failed in rebuilding the infrastructure of New Orleans and other affected areas.

Evidence: Only 14% of the New Orleans residents got trailers that were supposed to be use as shelters. Other areas got about 86% of those trailers. This means that New Orleans did not get their wanted amount.

Assertion: A lot of people were displaced.

Reasoning: People were greatly displaced during Katrina. Even today, some of them still are homeless and don't have any place to go.

Evidence: 800,000 people were displaced during Katrina and as of now, 250,000 people are still left homeless and displaced.

Assertion: The aftermath of events after Katrina were a complete disaster.

Reasoning: Many people were knocked into poverty after Katrina. Some families are not able to even own a car! Many people lost their jobs as well, and all the companies left many cities.

Evidence: As of 2000, only one company remained: the power company. 50,000 people lost their jobs. It lost about 100,000 people in just 44 years. It also one of the most poorest cities in the United States.

Hence the Proposition side as won this debate.

Hi,My name is Anush Polamraju and I am on the proposition side of this debate. Here are my reasons why the federal government failed to help people during Hurricane Katrina.

Assertion:Hurricane Katrina changed the gulf coast landscape and the face of its culture when it hit in 2005.

Reasoning:With more than 250,000 former residents of New Orleans still scattered across the country

Evidence:"When Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast, the Federal Government failed its people" says America's Future co-director Robert Bosage. (nhi.org)

Hi, my name is Heer Patel and I support the idea that the federal government has failed in rebuilding the gulf coast after hurricane Katrina.

Here, I will state my points.

1.The food supply and shelter of the people who faced Hurricane Katrina was low. The government did not help enough with this.

2.After some years later, the government has not fixed the problem as much as needed.

3.The federal government did not do enough.

Assertion: The food supply and shelter of the people who faced Hurricane Katrina was low. The government did not help enough with this.

Reasoning: FEMA, federal emergency organization, lost a lot of supplies. They gave loads and loads of ice, but 2 years after the hurricane, people decided to throw the unused $100 million ice away. Also, they paid for the mobile homes costing millions but this was a huge letdown, since these can not be used because they are not used in flooded plains. FEMA turned away doctors volunteering their services and delivery of emergency supplies.

Evidence: In places that desperately needed help, such as the New Orleans Superdome, it took days to deliver medical supplies. FEMA delivered millions of pounds of ice to holding centers in cities far away from the Gulf Coast. FEMA sent trucks carrying ice on wild goose chases across the country. Two years after the storm, the agency ended up throwing out $100 million of unused ice. FEMA also paid for 25,000 mobile homes costing $900 million, but they went virtually unused.

Assertion: After some years later, the government has not fixed the problem as much as needed.

Reasoning: Few years after Hurricane Katrina, people were still struggling because of unemployment and other problems related to economy there. The storm has killed nearly 1833 people and resident were still rebuilding the ravaged cities. So many businesses left the city because of the disaster and did not come back because they were afraid that they will not get enough customers.

Evidence : The US economy rebounded from Katrina but the regions affected by the storm have not. Thousands of people lost their jobs, gas prices soared along with the other energy prices. Nearly 2.3 millions people were left without power.

Assertion: The federal government did not do enough.

Reasoning: They had to give 70 billion dollars more than they did!

Evidence: The total they had to pay was 150 billion dollars for the recovery of Hurricane Katrina, but they only paid 80 billion dollars. Many people did not get what was needed. Even the tailors and apartments were toxic because the air around it was barely breathable and was toxic to animals and humans.

1.The food supply and shelter of the people who faced Hurricane Katrina was low. The government did not help enough with this.

2.After some years later, the government has not fixed the problem as much as needed.

3.The federal government did not do enough.

And hence the proposition side has won this debate.

The Federal Government has failed to rebuild the gulf coast after Hurricane Katrina because most of the population was displaced.

-Most of the people that use to live in the states that got affected by Hurricane Katrina are living in other states. Many people are still in poverty and they are homeless.

- According to datacenterresearch.org and ourfuture.org, over 1 million people were displaced during Hurricane Katrina and 250,000 still are. In 10 years, 250,000 people are still homeless and displaced because of Hurricane Katrina.

The Federal Government has failed to rebuild the gulf coast after Hurricane Katrina because President Bush and the people in his organization were not doing their job properly.

-He ignored some of the states and he didn’t supply some of them with enough resources. The people didn’t get homes and there wasn’t enough food and other supplies.

-According to wikipedia.org, New Orleans(the place that received the most damage) only received about one-fifth of the trailers that they requested. Most of the people were homeless.

The Federal Government has failed to rebuild the gulf coast after Hurricane Katrina because they didn’t use all of the money that foreign countries sent them.

If they had used the money, more people could be living in homes, out of poverty, and other buildings could have been built.

- According to wikipedia.org, the U.S. received $800 million from foreign countries. The U.S. used only $40 million and most of the money aid wen

Hi, I am Agni Rajinikanth. I agree to the statement that our government has failed to rebuild the gulf coast after hurricane Katrina.

Assertion #1:

The government did not save all the people there. They failed doing their job.

Reasoning #1:

They failed to rebuild the homes and structures that were destroyed and people were homeless. There weren’t enough food for people. The dams that many governments built were destroyed and collapsed.

Evidence #1:

Many people did not find or were able to get into shelters. There were less people that the shelter could accommodate than the number of people who needed it. 600,000 households were displaced. And 1.5 million people were affected and more than 800,000 citizens were forced to leave out of their houses.

Assertion #2:

There was an economical dropdown.

Reasoning #2:

Many people lost their money. It was washed away by the flood, soaked up. This caused many people to be bankrupt and face poverty.

Evidence #2:

Many people’s homes were flooded up till the attic. The houses were destroyed so the money was lost.

Hello, my name is Vaishnavi Bhalla and I support the idea that the government has failed to rebuild the gulf coast after Hurricane Katrina.

Assertion: The redevelopment after Katrina cut off opportunities for thousands of families to return to the city and added to the exclusion of African American families of New Orleans.

Reasoning: As a result of Katrina and discriminatory rebuilding process the low income groups have not been able to return to New Orleans.

Evidence: People of color now make smaller percentage of New Orleans than they did before the storm.

Thank you.

Hello my name is Nia and I am supporting the proposition side of this debate.

1. Assertion:The Gulf Coast has high insurance costs

Reasoning: Before Katrina, people who lived on the Mississippi Coast paid on average $952 a year on a $100,000 insurance policy. After Hurricane Katrina, for people living between Interstate 10 and the beach, the cost is twice that, $1,869 a year.

Evidence: After Hurricane Katrina, in some areas the insurance shot up 30% or more.

2. Assertion:There has been a huge loss in business development after the hurricane.

Reasoning: In 2005 after Hurricane Katrina many people's houses were destroyed and they moved out of the gulf coast area. Stores need costumers and without customers they will shut down. If the Federal Government had done a good job, more people would have moved back.

Evidence: The population of New Orleans fell from 484,674 before Katrina (April 2000) to an estimated 384,320(July 2014).

Hello. My name is Chloe Gocher and I strongly believe that the federal government HAS failed in rebuilding the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina. I would like to argue this for the following reasons:

1. There are former residents of the Tremé neighborhood being forced out of their homes.

2. There are people that are still not allowed in their homes

3. ?

Now I would like to provide my reasons for asserting so.

1. ?

2. The federal government is not doing anything for housing reconstruction

3. ?

Now I would like to give some evidence for my reasons.

1. According to ourfuture.com, the federal government have allowed developers to buys up the land and develop it. Having done so, the developers have made these new properties way to expensive for people to buy it.

2. There are 2.5 billion dollars that remain untouched that were supposed to be used for reconstruction, according to ourfuture.com

Hi! My name is Fisayo Odukoya and I strongly believe that the government have failed at the rebuilding of the damage after Katrina for the following reasons.

Assertion: The government did not save all of the people that lost their homes and are now on the streets.

Reasoning: There are still many homes and other structures that need to be rebuilt for the population of New Orleans to increase to what is was before.

Evidence: Many of the dams that have been rebuilt have failed and have collapsed again.

Once again I am Fisayo Odukoya and for these reasons, the proposition side has won this debate.

Thank You!

1. The Federal Government has not failed to rebuild the gulf coast after Hurricane Katrina because a lot of money was used to rebuild the infrastructure, provide homes, etc.

-The Congress allocated a lot of money to the states that got affected by Hurricane Katrina. Most of the infrastructure that was destroyed has now been rebuilt. Most of the people are living in houses.

-According to csmonitor.com, the Congress allocated $142 billion to all the states got affected. The damage was worth $125 billion but they provided extra money.

2. The Federal Government has not failed to rebuild the gulf coast because they sent a lot of workers to the cities to help strenghten the protection systems.

-The government set aside a lot of money and workers to build the levees and walls to prevent floods so that something like Hurricane Katrina could never happen again.

-According to cnbc.com, the Congress spent $14.6 billion to improve the levees and make them stronger. They hired people to improve the designs of the levees.

Hello I am Ananya Gangavarapu and I support the idea that the Government has not failed in rebuilding after hurricane Katrina

Assertion: The federal government used a lot of money in funds.

Reasoning: President Bush had sent many funds to organizations so that they can build back New Orleans' infrastructure and other housing.

Evidence: Over 16 billion dollars was dedicated solely to rebuilding infrastructure. Many plans were approved by the government and executed.

Assertion: The government helped strengthen the protection system in cities after Katrina.

Reasoning: The federal government sent help to New Orleans so that the levees can protect the city better than when Katrina struck.

Evidence: Officials changed the design of the levees, making them more durable and more tougher. They also give a 100 year protection system.

Hello my name is Milind Singh and I strongly believe that the Federal Government has not failed in rebuilding the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina.

Assertion: People whose homes were destroyed, got money from the government to have their homes rebuilt.

Reasoning: The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) received $16.7 million dollars of Federal funding for their Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) at President Bush's request.

Evidence: HUD has been working with hurricane-impacted states to make hurricane victims' homes stronger or have them relocated. HUD approved the States’ rebuilding plans in record time. The HUD program represents the largest

single housing recovery program in U.S. history.

Assertion: The People who are displaced are being moved into long term solutions.

Reasoning: HUD is working with FEMA to build and lease homes to displaced people.

Evidence: To date over 10,000 HUD homes have been leased to displaced families. The Housing Authority of New Orleans (HANO), which had been under HUD

receivership since 2002, had 7,000 public housing units of which approximately

5,000 were occupied.

Hi my name is Vishnu Gade and I strongly believe that the Federal Government has not failed to rebuild the East Coast after Hurricane Katrina.

Assertion: After Hurricane Katrina many people without homes were given enough money to get a house.

Reasoning: HUD, or Housing and Urban Development, has been working very hard to build or rebuild houses for people who have lost homes during natural Disasters.

Evidence: After Hurricane Katrina HUD was given 16.7 million dollars to rebuild homes for the people who have lost their homes during the storm.

Hi, my name is Heer Patel and strongly support the idea that the government has not failed in rebuilding the gulf coast after Hurricane Katrina.

1.The federal government has repaired and strengthened the infrastructure.

2.They have tried really hard.

3. The Congress has done a lot.

4. All that matters is that they tried.

Assertion: The federal government has repaired and strengthened the infrastructure.

Reasoning: The New Orleans hurricane protection system is now better than it was when Katrina hit. Levees and flood walls have been armored to protect against erosion and pumping stations are being storm proofed.

Evidence: The corps repaired and restored 220 miles of flood walls and levees since September 2005. The project was carried out by 26 corp contractors.

Assertion: They have tried really hard

Reasoning: They spent billions of dollars giving every person who does not have a house, at least a tailor or apartment building. Even if they did not give everyone a big house, they do not get money out of thin air, so what they did was still awesome.

Evidence:Altogether, they have spent over 80 billion dollars for repairing the infrastructure.

Assertion:The Congress has done a lot.

Reasoning: They approved billions of dollars to rescue the people that are suffering and helped a lot of people with that money.

Evidence: Forty thousand personnel from the National Guard work on the Gulf Coast. The American Red Cross cares for about 96,000 people in nine states. Many police officers have walked off the job.

Assertion: All that matters is that they tried.

Reasoning: Okay, they did not do great, but they tried their best. They spent not millions, but billions, of dollars repairing the infrastructure of the golf course. If this isn't enough, just think, where do they get billions of dollars. They don't get out it out of thin air. This says that they have tried.

Evidence: The federal government has spent billions of dollars giiving people homes and fixing the environment.

1.The federal government has repaired and strengthened the infrastructure.

2.They have tried really hard.

3. The Congress has done a lot.

Reasoning: The Americorps and Senior Corps volunteers have assisted more than 3 million Katrina survivors including the rebuilding or repairing of 15400 homes. Today 98% of these apartments are fully restored and families are back in their homes.

Evidence: In the last 10 years, CNCS has invested more than 33 million dollars to support volunteers in Louisiana and Mississippi. HUD has set aside 20 million dollars in community development block grand disaster recovery funding.

Source: The Whitehouse Press Office Release

Assertion: The school system in New Orleans is much better than before.

Reasoning: The charter schools took over the failing New Orleans public school system and today, it is nationally recognized as a potential model for urban school system.

Evidence: The city's high school graduation has increased to 73% last year from 54% in 2005. The percentage of seniors attending college has increased to more than half of all seniors from a third a decade ago.
